The first clip from Marvel’s Black Panther movie highlights T’Challa’s superhero costume, as well as a few of its special powers.
Excitement is building for Marvel’s next big movie offering, Black Panther. The titular character was introduced in 2016’s Captain America: Civil War, and Chadwick Boseman wowed fans with his portrayal of the superhero (real name T’Challa). With less than a month left until the film hits theaters now, Marvel is entering the final stage of marketing for Black Panther, as signaled by the release of the first full clip from the movie.
The clip premiered as part of The Ellen Show, where Boseman was guest-starring as part of the film’s ongoing promotional tour. As this clip illustrates (see the video above), Black Panther’s costume is composed of a vibranium weave, the same substance that Captain America’s shield is made from. Vibranium absorbs kinetic energy into itself, essentially making the Black Panther bulletproof. However, this clip suggests that Wakanda has developed the technology to tap into the kinetic energy stored by vibranium, and then release it.
The release of energy here is phenomenal, as Black Panther is shown effortlessly flipping a car. It’s likely he can also use these energy bursts to augment his own already-impressive physical skills. Back in June, Marvel Studios head Kevin Feige revealed that T’Challa is no ordinary man; he’s ingested a rare Heart-Shaped Herb, and thus has become something of a super-soldier. Add vibranium to that mix, though, and the Black Panther’s agility – including his ability to make tremendous leaps – is unparalleled.
The suit appears to have been developed by Black Panther’s sister, Shuri. She’s essentially Wakanda’s chief technologist, and has been working with vibranium for years. As actress Letitia Wright has explained, “She has an innovative spirit and an innovative mind, and she wants to take Wakanda to a new place.”No doubt part of that “new place” involves unlocking the secrets of vibranium, and the Black Panther – Wakanda’s ancestral champion – is clearly the first beneficiary.
Ironically, Wakanda’s vibranium resources are both their greatest asset and the reason the African nation is under threat. The world has learned of vibranium’s power, and seeks to tap into it. No doubt the fall of the Avengers has added to the political pressure to gain access to this rare metal, given that the Earth is currently defenseless, should another alien force attack…
