Fans of the Idris Elba-starring crime drama Luther may not have too long to wait to see the detective in action. Series five of the acclaimed cop show is set to go into production early in 2018, which means it could be on our screens before the end of next year. Producer Neil Cross, talking to Deadline, also revealed that the script for the series has been finalised, and that Idris Elba will be returning to the eponymous role.
Luther returns “We’re in prep right now and we’re doing a bit of casting and we start shooting in January,” Cross revealed. “For some reason, I always seem to shoot in the depths of winter.” Fans may also be wondering how the long-rumoured film version of Luther is coming along. While no details have been confirmed, it looks as though the project is in motion, with Cross revealing that he’s “absolutely” still toying with the idea of bringing Elba’s character to the big screen.
“Every TV [season] we think it’s going to be the end,” he said, “not least because Idris is very busy and has a successful career, but we always miss him when it’s over, and I start coming up with ideas and we always come back for more.”
Details are scarce on series five, and late 2018 might be a long wait, but fans needn’t worry. Cross has a new show coming to BBC One titled Hard Sun, a six-part “pre-apocalyptic” crime drama that stars Agyness Deyn and Jim Sturgess. It focuses on two police officers who stumble upon proof that the world is facing certain destruction – in five years’ time. “We set out to make a show that’s not really like any other show and I think we’ve succeeded,” Cross told Deadline. “We had a blast making it.”
