What’s Exciting To Patty Jenkins About The Wonder Woman Sequel

This summer’s Wonder Woman was the hottest movie of the summer and one of the biggest movies of the year so far. It’s so big that nobody is wasting any time getting ready for the sequel. While some directors might want to do something different before jumping into a sequel, it sounds like Patty Jenkins is excited to get right back into the story of the Amazon superhero. After successfully creating Wonder Woman in her origin story movie, Jenkins is ready to see what Wonder Woman can do when she spends the entire film as the Wonder Woman we all know and love. According to the director…

The greatest thing about making this movie was the fact that you’re really building to the Wonder Woman that we all love, but not until the end of the movie. The most exciting thing about [the sequel] is literally seeing her loose in the world now, living those classic stories. Here’s Wonder Woman, and what can she do? It should be a totally different movie, but a grand and now full-blown Wonder Woman in the world.

One of the reasons that fans love origin stories is that the moment in which our main character truly becomes the superhero we know is a moment of high drama that can look epic on film. However, for that moment to have that great meaning and impact it has to build to that point by starting us out with a character who is not that hero. Diana becomes Wonder Woman on a battlefield in World War I France and it’s one of the best superhero action scenes we’ve ever seen, but part of why it means so much is that we’ve spent half the movie with no Wonder Woman at all.

Patty Jenkins tells ET that she’s proud of having created the movie that saw Wonder Woman come into being, but what’s most exciting about the sequel is that now she can start the story with Wonder Woman, which opens up any number of possible places for the character to go. She makes reference to “classic stories”, implying that perhaps the sequel could be based on some well loved comic book tale, something that really wasn’t an option the first time around. The film had to deal with all the necessary aspects of the origin story. Any other significant plot would have gotten the short end of the stick due to the origin, but now anything is possible.

And because of the character that Wonder Woman is, anything really is possible. Rumors have indicated that the sequel could take place during the Cold War of the 1980s. Due to the fact that Gal Gadot’s character is functionally immortal, literally any time or place is available to the filmmakers. Wonder Woman 2 is currently set for a December 2019 release.
