New Facebook bot helps you find upcoming protests near you

Donald Trump has been in office for less than a month, but already the controversial President has been the cause of a number of different protests — so many, in fact, that it can be difficult to keep track. Now, a new Facebook bot called WeBot hopes to make keeping up with what protests are going on in your town, and what they’re for, a little easier.

To get started, login to Facebook and send a Messenger message to WeBot. The bot will message back and ask you where you’re located, a question you can answer by typing in your city or simply sharing your location.

From there, the bot will send you all of the anti-Trump protests it knows about in your area. You can join the event’s Facebook page from within the bot or even share a protest you plan on attending on your timeline to rally a few friends to join you. Over time, the bot will also keep you informed about new protests in your area as they’re added, so you’ll always be on top of what’s going on around you.

While WeBot is the first Facebook bot we know of to help protestors, it’s far from the first tool developed to help anti-Trump citizens organize. For instance, the site Callthemin helps keep voters informed about upcoming congressional decisions and where their delegates stand, and provides phone numbers to call to voice your opinion as well as scripts with talking points when you get through. And last week, when Trump threatened to cut federal funding to UC Berkeley two students created Presidential Actions, a nonpartisan app that makes information like executive orders easily accessible on your smartphone.
